IT’S IPA DAY!!

Given that the first Thursday in August is IPA day, we decided to celebrate by throwing in a few hop charged IPA’s for your enjoyment, as well as an imperial sour, a dessert stout and some other tasty drops which we think you’ll love just as much as we do.

With limited releases from Golden Hills, Boat Rocker and Ballistic brewing, some solid seasonal drops from Wold of the Willows, Bad Shepherd and Jetty Road, as well as banging core range beers from Temple Brewing, Deeds and WOTW, we really do have something for everyone.

I’d love to hear what you think about the cube contents, what you’d like to see in future cubes or any breweries that you think we should hit up - feel free to sling me an email at cheers@mrmods.beer

Mad love and stay safe.

Love Rob x

Tasting Notes

Golden Hills Brewing - Imperial Berry Sour 7% ABV

Glass Style - Teku/Stemmed Glass Serving Temp - 8-10°

What They Say - Vibrant in colour and on the nose, additions of Raspberry, Strawberry and Blueberry add depth to this 7% sour.

What We Say - The brewers gave a short and sweet description of this beer, so I’m going to try and go a little further. This pours a hazy pink (imagine a berry smoothie from Boost Juice that you’ve poured into another glass when you got home…) and delivers aromas of raspberries and strawberries until the cows come home that entice memories of inhaling deeply when you’re making a fruit salad or walking through a fruit market in berry season. From the moment this hits your tongue, the blueberries immediately make themselves apparent. The tartness that you’d normally associate with the berries themselves has transferred nicely to this cracker of a sour, and the 7% ABV is nowhere to be seen.

Ballistic Brewing - WCIPA Single Hop HBC630 6% ABV

Glass Style - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Brought to you by our good friends at Yakima Chief Hops & Cryer Malt, HBC 630 is a new world experimental hop shipped directly to us from the USA. Presenting unique characteristics including raspberry, cherry, sweet candy and even hints of creamy peach and banana!

What We Say - Well it may just be me, but I didn’t get any of the “unique characteristics” listed above. What I did get was a delightfully dank and resiny WCIPA that is as bitter as my ex mother in law. Enjoy!

Jetty Road - Infinite 8 DIPA 8.8% ABV

Glass Style - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 8-10°

What They Say - The IIPA recipe contains eight American hops, 8.8% ABV and 800kg of malt. With a sweet silky body that conceals the alcohol, balanced perfectly with a generous addition of eight hop varieties, the Infinite 8 layers beautiful citrus notes, dank and piney undertones with a big modern tropical fruit flavour.

What We Say - From the get go, this DIPA delivers. 8 different hops could quite easily turn into a huge pile of overwhelming muck, but not in this case - it’s exactly as the brewery says - tropical fruit, with dank and piney undertones. The 8.8% ABV is nowhere to be seen. Kick back, put up your feet and enjoy.

Boat Rocker - Space Cowboy DIP Hopped IPA 7.5% ABV

Glass Style - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Welcome to the BIG DIP-A! A new technique called DIP hopping has been employed in this big, bold IPA. The process is used to bring out flavours from the hops that normal dry hopping can’t while also removing some of the more undesirable flavours. Innovation at its finest! Space Cowboy boasts a wonderfully aromatic profile that throws back to the classic West Coast IPA with a distinctly modern twist.

What We Say - Well colour me impressed. This really is something else…with an aroma that smacks of tropical fruit juice (think mango and pineapple) and an extremely clean palate, this went down way too easy. No residual resiny aftertaste like your regular WCIPA, just the memories of one hell of a beer. N.B. If your cube is missing this beer, it wasn’t me keeping it for myself, it was the postman - yeah, that’s it, the postie is stealing your beers…

Bad Shepherd - Sticky Date Stout 7.5% ABV

Glass Style - Stout Glass Serving Temp - 8-10°

What They Say - Creamy and full-bodied with rich, indulgent, butterscotch caramel tones and just a hint of vanilla. This is not your average stout. Sweet dreams are made of these.

What We Say - Well the cats at bad Shepherd weren’t lying when they said that this is loaded with butterscotch caramel. From the nose to the palate, its caramel for days with nice little warmth at the back, reminding you that this is indeed a 7.5% ABV beer we’re drinking. Let’s not forget that mild sweetness and a creamy mouthfeel thanks to the addition of dates and lactose, and we truly do have a dessert in a glass.

Wolf of the Willows. - West Coast Lager 5.5% ABV

Glass Style - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What They Say - This West Coast Lager was put under a rapid lager ferment under pressure, to create a dry, light and crisp lager. Experimental New Zealand Hop NZH-107 plays the setting sun on this West Coast beauty, with intense tropical fruit of guava & passionfruit, and aromas of citrusy grapefruit & lime characteristics.

What We Say - Dry, crisp and light? Check, check and check. Pouring a delightful golden colour, there is a definite citrus aroma present from the get go. The crisp palate has subtle tropical notes and a nice dry body which makes for a most enjoyable drop. IF the weather allows, wait for a day with a bit of sun and enjoy this outside.

Wolf of the Willows - The Woodsman Amber Ale 4.5% ABV

Glass Style - Pint Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What They Say - Inspired by cool, clear winter nights, camping by the fire, and enjoying what nature has gifted us, The Woodsman Amber Ale is the perfect winter accompaniment. Notes of stone fruit hops are paired with soft, toffee malts, balanced by a velvety mouth feel and light bitterness. Malt driven, smooth and easy drinking, for the Woodsman in all of us....

What We Say - This is a beer I look forward to each year. Slightly fruity with lashings of toffee, all wrapped up with in a big malty hug with a subtle bitterness rounding it all out, The Woodsman is a solid example of what an amber ale should be.

Deeds Brewing - Draught 4.2% ABV

Glass Style - Pint Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What They Say - A bright, clean and refreshing lager made with 20% maize adding a balanced creaminess to its crisp finish. Hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, evoking slight notes of mandarin oranges.

What We Say - This is a great “just got home from work” beer that goes down extremely easy. Light coloured with the most subtle of citrus aromas and a slightly creamy mouthfeel, expect a crisp and clean lager that would pair amazingly with a Mexican feed or your favourite pizza. Also works amazingly well as a shower beer.

Temple Brewing - Anytime Pale Ale 4.7% ABV

Glass Style - Pint Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What They Say - American Pale Ale with piney and resinous hop aromas. Light caramel sweetness and a lengthy, firm bitterness.

American New World hops feature, providing pine, and citrus notes. Sweetness from a small addition of light crystal malt in the malt bill. Piney hop flavour up front, finishing with a lengthy, firm bitterness. Light caramel sweetness carries through.

What We Say - This is another beer that is perfect for those sunny winter days we seem to have been experiencing lately. The above description is pretty much bang on here - the piney aroma, the pine and citrus hit that envelopes the palate with a slight resiny presence, and a tidy little bitterness that’s just along for the ride.
