Can you believe we’re already a third of the way through winter?

Where has the year gone?!?! But rather than look back and reminisce, let’s look forward and talk beer! This month we’ve got two double features - (Akasha and Local Brewing Company) as well as amazing drops from AVNGE, The Boys Brewing, Bright Brewing, Land & Sea and the debut appearance of Danish brewing legends Toøl!

As always, I’d love to hear what you think about the cube contents, what you’d like to see in future cubes or any breweries that you think we should hit up - feel free to sling me an email at cheers@mrmods.beer or tag us in your IG posts (@mrmods.beer).

Mad love and thanks for the support.

Love Rob x

Tasting Notes

Akasha Beer - Super Chill 4.2% ABV

Suggested Glass - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What they say - Refresh your sense of just how good a cold one can be with this perfectly balanced, endlessly smashable beer. Crisp, clean and great tasting with a light tropical haze and a dry, satisfying finish, it’s the ultimate session beer for kicking back… or kicking on.

What we say - This is pours with an amazingly pale haze and that unmistakable tropical aroma, but think green/dry rather than overripe and sweet. With a super dry body, this was a great way to start my Friday evening and get my motor running. Definitely one to watch out for.

Akasha Beer - Korben D 8.5% ABV

Suggested Glass - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 8-10°

What they say - From the heart of the hop cosmos comes the Korben. A dazzling constellation of Simcoe, Centennial and Mosaic with a huge passionfruit shine, soaring tropicals, subtle sweetness and a sublime bitter finish, it’s as artfully composed as the music of the spheres.

What we say - This is another one of those beers that I eagerly look forward to every year and you’re about to find out why. Dank and resinous, this has lashings of tropical aromas along with a rad subtle sweetness thanks to the 8.5% ABV and a lingering bitterness that coats the tongue.

AVNGE Brewing - The Hunt For Red IPA 5.8% ABV

Suggested Glass - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What they say - The Hunt Is On! Like our brave hops, we went to great depths brewing our take on the Red IPA. American hops deliver 60IBU supported by a Gladfield malt backbone.

What we say - The crew at AVNGE are fast becoming known for producing solid beers, and this is certainly no exception. An amazing piney/resiny palate with a burnt orange/toffee vibe assault your senses and a solid bitterness ties it all together in a nice little 5.8% ABV shaped bow.

Toøl - Whirl Domination IPA 6.2% ABV

Suggested Glass - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What they say - Whirl Domination is the first IPA to be brewed in our shiny new brewhouse in Svinninge, so naturally, we were curious as to what our new baby could do!

We pushed the hops to the limit, packing in as much aroma as possible to this fresh AF beauty. Thus begins a new era of our hoppy world domination - drink it, and embrace the future…

What we say - Toøl are one of those breweries who continuously produce solid beers, and this is no exception. Pouring a straw yellow with a tight, white head that delivers a citrusy aroma, and tastes of tropical fruit with a decent pine presence, while still being extremely well balanced.

Local Brewing Co. - Red Velvet Milk Stout 4.5% ABV

Suggested Glass -  Goblet Serving Temp - 6-8°

What they say - Our silky and milky stout will send ripples of enjoyment with berry purée tartness to complement. Then we thought let's add cacao and vanilla to ensure you ride the velvet undertones of this winter warmer.

What we say - Just the mention of red velvet is enough to get most people salivating at the thought of a moist, tasty cake. While I found the berry to be a little subtle, the cacao and vanilla paired well with both the berry purée and the roasted malts to deliver a drop that delivers what you’d expect. The addition of lactose definitely helps create a nice, velvety mouthfeel.

Beer Soundtrack - Never, Never Gonna Give You Up by Cake

Local Brewing Co. - Pacific Ale 4.2% ABV

Suggested Glass - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What they say - This Pacific Ale is the perfect companion for a sunny day, with a crisp balance of orange and melon. Where's paradise? You’re drinking it.

What we say - Over winter yet? Longing for those warm spring/summer days? Well spring may still be a few months off, but here in Victoria the winter has produced more than a handful of days which, if not for the temperature, could almost be mistaken for spring and this beer is the perfect soundtrack. Crisp, clean and well balanced with a subtle fruit presence thanks to a well thought out hop selection, this is sure to help take you away to a freshly mowed lawn with sun shining on your face as you drink that well earned beer.

Land & Sea - Japanese Rice Lager 4.4% ABV

Suggested Glass - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 2-4°

What they say - Crisp, light & refreshing. The generous rice additions to the barley & grain mix creates a palatable lager light in colour & body finishing exceptionally dry.

What we say - This is a cracking lager! The brewers nailed the description as well - Crisp? Check! Light? Double Check! Refreshing? You’d better believe it! And that dry finish? Well let’s not even start on that!!

The Boys Brewing - Galactic XPA 5.0% ABV

Suggested Glass - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 4.6°

What they say - In a galaxy far, far away under a milky way of hops. You will find an explosion of passionfruit & citrus flavours followed by a smooth crisp finish. Sit back and enjoy as this refreshing XPA takes your tastebuds into hyperdrive.

What we say -  The second release from newcomers The Boys Brewing is a solid example of an XPA. With a balanced hop/malt profile resulting in a citrus and passionfruit hit with a decent bitterness, this definitely wouldn’t be out of place at any summer bbq.

Bright Brewery - Affogato Stout 5.5% ABV

Suggested Glass - Goblet Serving Temp - 8-10°

What they say - Our fast-selling and most-popular beer of all time is BACK! A hearty & full bodied stout brewed with locally roasted coffee beans from our friends at Sixpence Coffee, Bright. The addition of creamy lactose & vanilla makes this Affogato Stout sweet, rich & roasty, just like our favourite caffeinated dessert.

What we say - I first tried this at GABS last year, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The best way I can describe this is imagine a cold shot of black coffee, with a creamy mouthfeel and sweetness thanks to vanilla and lactose. If I didn’t know it was a beer, I’d easily be convinced that someone had made me a long black and thrown some vanilla ice cream in it. Colour me sold!
