It’s almost summer eve!!

October already!! Before we know it, summer will be here and it’ll be time to catch up with the family for Christmas or visit the beach for a swim/surf/fish. Until then though, we’ve got some serious business to attend to. The October Craft Cube!

This month you’ll find another monster of a beer from Kaiju, a few Pale’s for those sunny afternoons, a tidy little number from Mr Banks which is perfect for Oktoberfest, a few sneaky numbers from NZ (including an amazing Star Wars beer) and a cracker from Sweden’s Omnipollo.

I’d love to hear what you think about the cube contents, what you’d like to see in future cubes or any breweries that you think we should hit up - feel free to sling me an email at cheers@mrmods.beer

Mad love and stay safe.

Love Rob x

October Tasting Notes

8 Wired Brewing - Mos Eisley Cantina WCIPA 7.2% ABV

Glass Style - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - It may be a wretched hive of scum and villainy, but after a long day of smuggling and out-running swarms of Imperial TIE fighters, there's nothing like a night at the Mos Eisley Cantina. Settle in with a cold one, listen to some fine space jazz and finish the night with a classic binary sunset!

What We Say -It’s no secret that I’m a massive Star Wars fan, so as soon as I saw that 8 Wired released a beer referencing that infamous hive of scum and villainy, I knew that it had to be in a cube. Pouring a dark gold with a tight white head, the subtle aroma of pine, malt and bitter citrus becomes apparent and transfers across to the palate nicely, with a solid bitterness that lingers like a drink of banther milk. Just the trick for relaxing after a hard days work of dealing with bounty hunters and other intergalactic scum.

Duncan’s - Yum Yum Yuzu Lager 4.7% ABV

Glass Style - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 4-6°

What They Say - Yum Yum is a Japanese style lager brew with Yuzu – an aromatic Japanese citrus fruit.

What We Say - The official tasting notes are short and sweet, so let’s try and stretch them a little bit shall we? This has a light straw colour and an aroma of pear and citrus. Yuzu is often described as a combination of lime, lemon and grapefruit and this description is pretty bang on. The yuzu hit is nice and subtle, and is accompanied by a nice malt sweetness. If possible, try and enjoy this on a sunny Spring day after mowing the lawn or washing the car.

Mr Banks - Super Secret Drinking Competition 8.8% ABV

Glass Style - Pilsner Glass Serving Temp - 8-10°

What They Say - Brewed as an Oktoberfest beer of sorts. This medium to full bodied lager is packed full of flavour with a delightful crisp more-ish finish.

What We Say - Delivering a malty goodness with a slight sweetness and nice little bitterness

Kaiju - Mutation Program #6 Beyond the Black River BA Stout ABV

Glass Style - Stout Glass Serving Temp - 10-12°

What They Say - As a bonus beer for the GABs punters back in May this year, we brewed an exceptionally well received oatmeal stout called Velvet Kevorkian. By popular demand, we then released a few kegs of this beer into the trade too. And whilst this timeline was happening, we had also set in motion a classic "Tenet"-style time travel loop by having that same Kevorkian base beer maturing and blended with whiskey barrels for 6 months prior as well. The result is a brew that we are proud to release as (i) a reinvigorated entry in our Mutation series of beers, and (ii) our first true foray into barrel aging (we'd dabbled before, but not like this).

What We Say - There’s a heap going on here - Black. Rich. Velvety mouthfeel with a whiskey chaser. What’s not to like??

Omnipollo - Pleroma Creme Brûlée Sour 6% ABV

Glass Style - Stemmed Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Gooseberry and raspberry crème brûlée sour ale brewed with berries, lactose sugar and finely ground vanilla. Refreshingly tart, mildly acidic yet sweet elegant fragrant notes of raspberry and vanilla.

What We Say - This pours an opaque, rich red colour and resembles a breakfast juice. Expect the distinctive gooseberry flavours to give way to a raspberry sweetness/tartness with a subtle creamy mouthfeel.

Edge Brewing - Lilly Pilly Pop 2.9% ABV

Glass Style - Stemmed Glass Serving Temp 4-6°

What They Say - Just like the first two, we locally sourced a fresh, vibrant Aussie fruit and crammed in as much as possible. This beer undergoes a secondary fermentation with Lilly Pilly. A small, native pink berry with notes of cherry, cranberry and clove, indigenous to Australia's rainforests. Soured by lactobacilius and fermented dry, this thirst-quencher will leave you wanting more! Enjoy a tinnie or three with its low ABV!.

What We Say - Light in colour, light on the palate. The flavour, while subtle, is pretty much bang on with the breweries description and with the added lactobacillus leaves a nice tart finish, similar to a glass of cranberry juice.

Slipstream Brewing - West Coast Tour IPA 6.6% ABV

Glass Style - IPA Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Our tour begins in California, the land of Hollywood and hot pink sunsets. Cruise along the Golden Coast with this golden IPA, made with pure California malt that brings a sun-kissed vibe you can’t get anywhere else. Old school hops join with modern varieties to party on the beach with satisfying bitterness. Tastes like a California dream.

What We Say - In an age where the haze craze is still well and truly alive, the West Coast IPA is making a strong comeback and this is definitely one of the most solid WCIPA’s Ive had in a while. This is obscenely well balanced - an amazing malt profile that is wrapped up with a dank, resinous hop twang that lingers on the palate with a decent bitterness. In fact, maybe you should just send them back to me and I’ll drink it for you…

2 Brothers - Pay Day Pale Ale 4.5% ABV

Glass Style - Pint Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Pay Day pours very pale with a lasting foamy head and is as delicate as it looks. There are soft lemon citrus and stone fruit aromas, accompanied by light malt sweetness in a beer that's just as soft on the palate, with a barely perceptible balancing bitterness.

What We Say - Highly underrated, this Pale Ale is an absolute cracker. Obscenely well balanced with a subtle citrus hit and that awesome malt presence, this could make a great fridge filler for over summer.

Jetty Road - Pale Ale 4.8% ABV

Glass Style - Pint Glass Serving Temp - 6-8°

What They Say - Crafted to be a sessionable pale ale with a crisp and clean palate, underpinned by a subtle, satisfying bitterness. Tropical and citrus aromas come through from generous late hop additions of mosaic and simcoe.

What We Say - The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting warmer…time to grab a pale and kick back in the sun. Everything JR say this beer is, is pretty much bang on. Nice clean tropical/citrus vibe? Yep!. Sessionable with a subtle bitterness? You better believe it.
